Sainz thinks criticism of Ferrari's Formula 1 strategy is 'unfair'

Carlos Sainz says criticism of Ferrari's Formula One strategy has been unfair, after his tactics helped Charles Leclerc take center stage at the French Grand Prix.

In recent races Ferrari has been criticized for strategic decisions that cost it big results, such as the decision not to change used Leclerc tires in the last safety car during the British Grand Prix and the pits error that cost him victory in Monaco. . .

But at Paul Ricard on Saturday, Ferrari enacted a pre-weekend plan for Sainz to drag Leclerc in his wake in the third quarter to nullify Red Bull's top-speed advantage over the Scuderia down the extension.

The plan worked perfectly, as Leclerc admitted that Ferrari missed the opening lap of the third quarter, snatching the pole from Max Verstappen by 0.304sec.

Sainz, who will start from the back of the grid due to a change in power unit components, says Ferrari's qualifying tactics showed how "solid" the team is strategically.

"I think we've had a lot of criticism in terms of strategy," Sainz said. "And I think it's a bit unfair because [with] every team this season, there are going to be tire errors, tire choices, everything.

"But I think the team this year has been very strong in terms of strategy and I think today shows that. Also, the relationship with Charles and the way the team works, I think again he's doing very well as we work." Very well together.

"It's good to see. I think you have to give us and Ferrari we had a good day."

Ferrari chose to take the grid penalty at Paul Ricard because it still has to offer Sainz options for a solid recovery on the field.

When asked about the acceptable level of racing, Sainz replied: "I don't have a reference and above all we have half of the season left and the way I'm doing now on the track, with the speed I've been working at going." In the second quarter, how fast you were in Austria, at Silverstone, I think it's not worth thinking about.

"I'll keep thinking about what I've been thinking lately, which is to get back to last year's level and I think today I'm doing that and obviously I'll try until the team decides [otherwise].

"But for me, with half of the season left until the end of the season and everything that happened in the first half, there are still [options]."
